I have always had success with the ranking of my home based business websites by being diligent in selecting appropriate keywords, adding content of value and getting some quality back links. The Home Business Startup website was number one on Google before it was even completed!
But it seems that will no longer be sufficient to obtain good ranking for my websites in the future. Following the changes by Google and other search engines, no longer is getting good traffic going to meet the criteria for high ranking on search engines; now I have to also be aware of the click-through rates and the average time spent on my websites by individual visitors.
Good rankings will also require an active and dynamic social media presence, for search engines to assess the credibility of my websites. Search engines are now including Facebook ‘share’ and ‘likes’; as well as ‘re-tweets’ on Twitter and comments on blogs.
It will also be important to ensure that business websites are mobile friendly as there are now over 50% of web users accessing the web through mobile devices.
With Google constantly updating its search results with real-time information, business operators need to select keywords, add relevant and valuable content, get quality back links and have a social media campaign with readers taking an active role with Tweets, Like, Comments etc.
Many home based business operators do not have any search engine optimisation for their websites. The very concept of using Keywords is foreign to them. So taking notice and acting on these new rules will probably go unheeded.
But for those who are keen to increase their clients and sales using Internet marketing, some will want to embrace this new challenge. Google CEO Eric Schmidt says “This is the future and everyone will adapt” – well, they will if they are keen to have a competitive edge!

Nice article with some great points made. search engine optimisation has always been a minefield for most but its nice to see the internet evolving with the social media input and also good to see google implementing changes to take this into account.
it is so important for now new businesses to use all the resources available to them (facebook, twitter, bookmarking sites,) It will only increase exposure and sales.
