I am a ‘technology dummy’, but as I have over 50 websites, I feel I have proven to myself (and the members of my Home Based Business association) that it does not matter how old you are (I am 67) or what technical skills you have, you can still learn how to build a professional website that not only is a marketing tool for your home business start up, but can make you money, regardless of what industry you are in.
And you can do it a very low cost (or even no cost). The software I use cost me $197 and I can build any number of websites of any size and have all the bells and whistles included e.g. rotating banner ads, payment facilities etc.
There is even software for header design templates. The Host I use costs $10 a month (again any number of websites included in the same cost) and has a 99% uptime (their servers do not go on the blink!) and has support available 24/7. Once I accidently deleted one of my websites; in 30 minutes (for a cost of $30) my Host had it back on line for me.
Many people use a Blog type structure for their website, such as WordPress. The advantages are:-
* It is free
* It is easy to use
* There are templates that you can use for the layout and look of the Blog website (you don’t have to have a graphic designer)
* There are loads of different’ plugins’ to enable you to improve the functionality and therefore professionalism of the site
* Search engines check Blogs much more frequently than websites, so your chances of receiving a high ranking increases dramatically
* Viewers can leave comments (something that search engines look for when giving a high ranking)
I could talk for ages on this topic, but my advice to start ups is ‘check out how easy it is to do build your own professional website, before paying out huge amounts of money and then having to pay every time you want something added or changed’.

I built a couple websites a few years back. Html websites, and based on all the stuff I read at the time, it was all about getting the code right and keywords right and internal linking structure. Nowadays, wordpress sites have become the platform of choice. It seems google likes them. They are easy to put up and with all the different plug-ins you can do a lot with them. Plus, you can continually add content and encourage comments which google likes as well.
